The conjuring and subsequent sequels are a good example of this as well. If you take it seriously, then it's not going to live up to your expectations, but if you watch it with the intention of just having a fun time watching a movie then you will definitely enjoy it. I have this idea of some movies just being "fun" movies and I compare them to amusement park rides. It makes perfect sense, but it seems sort of rare that it makes such a huge difference with a horror film! I think it has something to do with the horror itself being used for comedic effect rather than just having a comedy with horror elements like in other horror comedies.Īll that said, I don’t remember it nearly as well as I’d like so this post is serving as a reminder to check it out again! Thanks, OP! It’s really interesting how much an understanding of the film’s intention changes everyone’s perception of how successful it is. I got a little older and watched and loved the Evil Dead films and went back to it at the beginning of college and I remember really enjoying it. The first time, I saw it with my family expecting a straight up horror film and was disappointed by the silliness, taking it as bad decisions by the filmmakers rather than intentional comedy. I’ve only seen it twice and I’ve had pretty polar opposite reactions.
